How to Edit HEIC Photos

Learn how to edit HEIC photos by using an editor that supports HEIC or by making a compatible JPG copy when your editor does not.

Edit the HEIC directly when you can; convert only when you need to

If your editor opens HEIC, you can edit the file there. If it does not, make a JPG copy for editing and keep the original HEIC until you are happy with the result.

Start with the editor you want to use

Try the HEIC file in your editor first. If it opens normally, there is no reason to convert it just because the filename ends in .heic.

If the editor rejects HEIC, create a JPG copy and edit that instead. Use the Viewer first if you only need to check what is in the file.

Edit HEIC directly

When your editor supports HEIC, work on a duplicate or use the app’s non-destructive editing features if it provides them. Keep the original until the finished image has been checked.

Make a JPG copy for an incompatible editor

A JPG copy is useful when the editor accepts JPEG but not HEIC. This is a real conversion, not a filename change, so the result may not carry every HEIC-specific property or piece of metadata.

Keep the original HEIC while you edit the JPG, especially if you may want a different export later.

Before deleting the original

Check the edited image at the size you will actually use. Confirm orientation, important detail, and any metadata you care about before replacing or deleting the source.

Edit first, then export if needed

If your editor can open HEIC, finish the edit there and export a different format only when the final use requires one. This avoids an unnecessary conversion before editing even begins.

If your editor will not open HEIC

First confirm that the file itself opens in a viewer. If it does, the problem is likely format support in the editor. Make a JPG copy for compatibility instead of renaming the extension.

If the file will not open anywhere, keep the original and investigate the file before making more copies.

Editing HEIC: quick answer

The simplest answer to how to edit HEIC photos is to use an editor that opens HEIC directly. If yours does not, convert a copy to JPG, edit the copy, and keep the HEIC original.
