View the HEIC first; convert only when you need compatibility
If the Chromebook app you use already opens the image, keep the original. Otherwise, the Morphio Viewer can open the HEIC in the browser and the JPG converter can create a compatible copy.
Open HEIC on a Chromebook
Use the Morphio HEIC Viewer to open the file in your browser. It can show the image, multiple frames or images, and available EXIF and image information.
Because the file is decoded inside the web app, this works independently of whether another ChromeOS app supports HEIC.
Convert to JPG when an app or website rejects HEIC
Choose the HEIC file in the JPG converter and download the JPG after it finishes. Privacy processes individual images in the browser; Cloud is available when you need ZIP input or server processing.
Keep the HEIC original until the JPG works in the Chromebook app or website that needs it.
When you need a JPEG copy, convert HEIC to JPG.
Why one Chromebook app may work and another may not
HEIC support can differ between the Files app, browser-based services, editors, and other ChromeOS apps. If one app rejects the file, try viewing it first before assuming the image is damaged.
If the receiving service only accepts JPG, converting a copy is usually the quickest fix.
For browser-specific viewing and upload help, see the Chrome HEIC guide.
If the file still will not open
Do not rename the extension. Try the file in the Morphio Viewer. If it opens there, convert a copy for the app that does not support HEIC.
If the Viewer cannot read it either, keep the original while you check the file itself.
Using another device?
For device-specific instructions, see the Windows HEIC guide.
Privacy, Cloud, and file handling
- Processing
- Privacy processes individual HEIC/HEIF images in your browser. Cloud uploads files to Morphio for server-side processing.
- Cloud retention
- Files uploaded in Cloud are deleted by default after one day.
- Metadata
- Morphio keeps supported metadata when the output format can carry it. Some HEIC-specific data may not transfer.
- ZIP files
- ZIP input is available in Cloud. A ZIP download for multiple successful results is available in both Privacy and Cloud.
View or convert?
View the original when you only need to inspect the image. Convert to JPG when a Chromebook app, website, school portal, or sharing service requires a more common format.
