Mac can open HEIC directly; convert only when you need another format
Recent macOS versions support HEIC in built-in apps such as Preview. If the next app or website needs JPG, export or convert a copy and keep the HEIC original.
Open HEIC on Mac
Double-clicking a HEIC file will normally open it in Preview when Preview is the default image app. You can also use the Morphio Viewer in the browser when you want a web-based preview or metadata view.
If Preview opens the image successfully, you do not need to convert it just to look at it.
Convert to JPG when you need compatibility
Use Preview’s export options or the Morphio HEIC-to-JPG converter when another app, website, printer, or recipient needs JPEG.
Morphio Privacy processes individual images in your browser. Cloud is available for server processing and ZIP input.
If a Mac app does not accept HEIC
The Mac itself may support HEIC even when a particular editor, upload form, or older application does not. Test the file in Preview first to separate a file problem from an app-compatibility problem.
If Preview works and the other app does not, create a JPG copy for that app.
For the format trade-offs, compare HEIC vs JPEG.
If the file will not open in Preview
Keep the original and try the Morphio Viewer. Do not rename .heic to .jpg, because that does not convert the image.
If neither Preview nor the Viewer can read the file, investigate the file before overwriting or deleting it.
Privacy, Cloud, and file handling
- Processing
- Privacy processes individual HEIC/HEIF images in your browser. Cloud uploads files to Morphio for server-side processing.
- Cloud retention
- Files uploaded in Cloud are deleted by default after one day.
- Metadata
- Morphio keeps supported metadata when the output format can carry it. Some HEIC-specific data may not transfer.
- ZIP files
- ZIP input is available in Cloud. A ZIP download for multiple successful results is available in both Privacy and Cloud.
Convert HEIC to JPG with Preview
To use Preview HEIC to JPG conversion, open the image in Preview and use File → Export, then choose JPEG as the format. The exact options shown can vary by macOS version.
For multiple files or a browser-based option, use Morphio instead.
Preview is usually the simplest built-in choice when you only need to open or export a HEIC photo. Open the image, check its orientation and appearance, then use Export when another app needs JPEG or another supported format.
If you are moving many photos into an older editor or upload system, test a few converted files first. Check color, orientation, dimensions, and any metadata you care about before processing the entire set.
When the original already works in Photos, Preview, or your editor, there is no benefit in converting it only because the extension is HEIC. Make a compatible copy when another step actually requires one.
PNG, PDF, and multiple files
Choose PNG when you specifically need PNG, and PDF when you need a document output. If several images should become one PDF, use the batch HEIC-to-PDF tool rather than the regular converter.
Use the batch JPG page when managing many HEIC-to-JPG files is the main task.
You can also combine images into one PDF, create separate PNG copies, or prepare photos for editing.
