A HEIC image and a MOV video contain different kinds of media, so a file-size comparison does not tell you which one is “better.” Decide whether you need the still image, the motion, or both.

Which file do you need?

Use the HEIC when the task is to view, edit, print, or convert the still photo. Use the MOV when the task involves the video or motion portion.

If both came from the same capture and you want to preserve the complete experience, keep both.

HEIC and MOV in Live Photos

Apple Live Photos can involve a still image and a short motion component. Depending on how files are exported or transferred, you may see a HEIC image alongside a MOV file.

Converting the HEIC to JPG converts the still image; it does not turn the MOV motion into a JPG.

Open the HEIC or convert that image to JPG. If you only have a MOV and need a still frame, that is a video-frame extraction task rather than HEIC conversion.
