A HEIC wallpaper is still an image file
If your phone or computer accepts the HEIC directly, you can use it as-is. If the wallpaper picker rejects it, convert a copy to a format the device accepts.
Check the image first
Open the HEIC wallpaper in the Viewer to confirm that the image looks right before converting it. This is especially useful when the file came from another device or a download.
Keep the original so you can return to it if a converted copy is cropped, resized, or handled differently by the wallpaper settings.
Convert the wallpaper when the device needs another format
JPG is a common fallback for photographic wallpapers. PNG is another option when PNG is specifically supported or useful for the image.
Conversion changes the file format, not the wallpaper crop or positioning. Set the final crop and fit in the device’s wallpaper controls.

If the wallpaper picker rejects the file
- Confirm that the file opens in a HEIC-capable viewer.
- Do not rename .heic to .jpg; convert it instead.
- Create a JPG or PNG copy and try that copy in the wallpaper picker.
- If the image opens but crops poorly, adjust the crop or choose an image with dimensions that suit the screen.
What the wallpaper file contains
When a wallpaper image uses HEIC, it is still an ordinary image file. The wallpaper feature itself may or may not accept that format.
The image format and the device’s wallpaper effects are separate things.
Can your device use HEIC as wallpaper?
Support varies by operating system, device, and wallpaper app. If the HEIC appears normally in the picker, use it. If it does not, a JPG copy is usually the simplest alternative.
